My name is Anthony A. Akins, Sr, and I am running for re-election for the position of school board member for the Bedford Board of Education of the Bedford City School District.

My Journey as an Alumnus and Advocate

Being an alumnus of this school district, I have seen both the highs and lows of its development. My journey with the Bedford City School District began as a student, where I experienced firsthand the dedication of our educators and the vibrancy of our community. As an active parent, I have remained deeply involved in the district, advocating for the best educational environment for all students. I am a Pro-Union candidate that supports workers rights to organize and bargain collectively.  With family members involved in unions, this has always been part of my life.  This unique perspective allows me to understand the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for our schools.

Vision for the Future

I believe that an alumnus and active parent with innovative ideas can help continue to push this school district forward towards the next level. My vision for the Bedford City School District includes:

•    Enhancing Educational Excellence: Ensuring that our curriculum remains rigorous and relevant to prepare our students for future success.
•    Promoting Equity and Inclusion: Creating a supportive environment where every student feels valued and has access to the resources they need to thrive.
•    Strengthening Community Engagement: Fostering strong partnerships between the school district, parents, and the broader community to create a collaborative and supportive educational ecosystem.
•    Innovating for the Future: Embracing new technologies and teaching methods to enhance learning experiences and outcomes.

As a school board member, I am committed to maintaining accountability and transparency in all our decisions and actions. I believe in being a voice for parents, students, and educators, ensuring that their concerns and ideas are heard and addressed.

Per Albert Einstein, "Doing the same thing and expecting different results" is the definition of insanity, and it means that if you keep repeating the same actions without changing your approach, you shouldn't expect a different outcome; you need to adapt and try something new to see a different outcome. This is what I want to persist in doing.  I am deeply passionate about the future of our school district and believe that, together, we can achieve great things. I humbly ask for your support in my re-election campaign to continue our work towards a brighter future for the Bedford City School District.

My platform is still: Our Children, Our Community, Our Future.  

 

Our Children:  Enhance focus on Social and Emotional Learning. Our students’ well-being needs to be properly addressed. Student achievement goes beyond simply grades.  Both objectives can be worked on together.  Our teachers are a valued piece of this puzzle so we need to listen to them as they are the closest to the students.  We need to make sure they have the tools and resources to enrich our students to the best of their ability.

Our Community: Expand community outreach through more communication.  Increase frequency of newsletters to keep community aware of available programs for families and spotlight students' achievements. Attending community council meetings to hear what issues residents are facing and provide an update on what’s going on at the school district level.

Our Future: Highlight ALL post graduation options as college may not be the next step for all students. Properly bringing back other options, such as trades. Our students should be prepared to be competitive in the workforce at any level they choose to enter it. ​
